Claude Opus 5 is Anthropic's Opus-class model available on Claude and the Anthropic API as of this review (released 24 Jul 2026). Treat the name as a generation label: check the in-product model picker before you build a workflow on it.
Catalog note
This is a current-generation card as of 21 Aug 2026. Anthropic also ships other Claude 5-class models at different prices. Confirm live names and limits on Anthropic's site.
Why operators care
Opus-class models are the ones you use when the packet is long, the job has many constraints, or you need the model to stay on a document you pasted — not when you need the cheapest rewrite.
What to verify in-product
- Current model id in the picker / API (`claude-opus-5` on the API at launch)
- Context window and attachment limits for your plan
- Whether your account is consumer, Team, or a contracted door (see the paste-hygiene lesson)
Honest limits
- Still a next-token model. It will invent a citation if you ask for one and do not provide sources.
- Fast / effort settings change cost and patience, not whether you need a human gate.
- Do not treat marketing "agent" language as permission to auto-send.
Best use cases
- Drafting from a source you pasted (SOP snippet, ticket, library card)
- Long-document compare and extract, then a human decides
- Coding and refactor help with the repo or file in context
- A second reader prompt — you still mark ship / no-ship
