Choosing Your First AI Tools: ChatGPT, Claude & Friends

The AI tool landscape is a buffet and you're about to be served. A practical tour of the big names, what each is best at, and how to pick without analysis paralysis.

What you will learn

  • Name the big three chatbots and what each is best at
  • Understand which specialist tools exist and when to reach for them
  • Use a simple method to choose tools without overthinking
  • Avoid the upgrade trap in the first month

The Shortlist (Stop Reading, Start Here)

If you're new to AI, you need exactly two things to start:

  1. A general-purpose chatbot - ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini (all have free tiers)
  2. One tool specific to your work - whatever your job uses most

That's it. Everything else is dessert.

The Big Three Chatbots

ChatGPT (by OpenAI)

The most famous name in AI. The free tier is genuinely useful and the paid tier is strong. Best all-rounder for most people - it's the default because it's everywhere.

Claude (by Anthropic)

The writer's favorite. Claude tends to produce more natural, warmer text and is excellent at long documents and coding. If you write a lot, try this one first.

Gemini (by Google)

The Google-native option. It lives inside Google's ecosystem, so it shines when you're already in Gmail, Docs, and Drive. Good for summarizing your own files.

Honest advice: you don't need to pick one and be loyal. They're free to try, and different tools suit different tasks. Having accounts on two is normal.

The Specialists Worth Knowing

  • Perplexity - a chatbot that shows its sources. Great for research when you need links to check
  • Canva AI - image generation and design for non-designers
  • ElevenLabs - realistic voice generation and narration
  • Runway / Sora / Kling - video generation (the "wow" demo tools)
  • Notion AI / Microsoft Copilot - AI built into the tools you already use for work

The Free-Tier Reality Check

Every major tool wants you to start free and upgrade later. That's good news for you:

  • Free tiers are real and usable, not fake trials
  • Limits exist (message caps, slower speeds) but are fine for learning
  • You will know within a week whether a tool earns its paid plan
  • Do NOT pay for anything in month one. Seriously. Put the wallet away.

How to Choose (The 10-Minute Method)

  1. Pick the chatbot that feels most natural to you - try the same prompt in two
  2. Use it daily for one week on real tasks, not toy questions
  3. When you hit a task it can't do well, search for a tool that specialises in it
  4. Only upgrade when a limit actually blocks your work

Try This Today

Open ChatGPT AND Claude (both free). Ask both the same question: "Help me plan my week" with your real tasks. Compare the answers. Whichever one you'd rather read wins your browser tab.

The One-Line Summary

Start free, start simple, and let your actual tasks - not the hype - tell you where to upgrade.
